Handling Tax Defence Items

This page shows you how to use the Beam Machine Tax Defence Workspace to track open tax matters and stop important SARS response deadlines from disappearing into email chaos.

Product: Beam Machine
Module: Tax -> Tax Defence Workspace
Role: Tax Manager, Reviewer, Finance Lead, Dispute Owner
Difficulty: Intermediate
Time: 8 minutes
Last Updated: 2026-03-10
Version: Current Beam Machine app build in this repo

Before You Start

  • You need access to Tax.
  • Defence items must already exist in the system for the page to show useful data.
  • This route is a tracking workspace, not the full objection, appeal, or disclosure drafting engine.

What is a tax defence item?

A tax defence item is a matter where you are responding to, challenging, regularizing, or formally dealing with a tax issue.

In the current BM build, defence items can represent:

  • assessment disputes
  • penalty objections
  • voluntary disclosures
  • ruling requests

When do you use this?

Use this page when SARS has raised an issue, when the business is preparing a formal response, or when management needs to know how much tax is exposed and what is due next.

If you treat these matters casually, the deadline is what hurts you first.

Where to find it

Primary path: Finance -> Tax -> Defence
Route: /dashboard/tax/defence

How to review defence matters

  1. Open Tax.
  2. Click Defence.
  3. Review the summary cards:
    • Total at Risk
    • Open
    • Under Review
    • Resolved
  4. Move to the Defence Items table.
  5. Review each item:
    • Tax Year
    • Issue Type
    • Description
    • SARS Ref
    • Amount at Risk
    • Due Date
    • Status
  6. Prioritize items that are both due soon and large in value.
  7. Escalate any item with unclear ownership immediately.

āœ… Checkpoint: You should now know what is open, what is urgent, and what carries the biggest exposure.

What the current BM route does and does not do

  • BM does give you a central list of defence matters and amount at risk.
  • BM does highlight dates that are due soon.
  • BM does not currently show a full document-response workflow, legal argument drafting flow, or correspondence timeline on this route.
  • BM does not replace the actual tax, legal, or advisory work needed to defend the matter properly.

Common Questions & Issues

"The page is empty"

Why this happens: No defence items are loaded for the current entity.

Fix: Confirm whether there are no active matters, or whether they are being tracked elsewhere.

"The amount at risk looks high, but the status says under review"

Why this happens: Status tells you where the matter sits. Amount tells you how painful it could be.

Fix: Do not let the comforting status hide the financial exposure. Review both together.

"Can I submit the objection from this page?"

Why this happens: The workspace feels operational.

Fix: No visible end-to-end submission workflow is exposed on this route. Use it for tracking and escalation.
