Managing Grants and Incentives

This page explains what the Beam Machine Grants & Incentives route currently does, what it helps you monitor, and what still sits outside the app in the real South African incentive process.

Product: Beam Machine
Module: Tax -> Grants & Incentives
Role: Tax Manager, Finance Lead, Strategy Lead, Reviewer
Difficulty: Intermediate
Time: 6 minutes
Last Updated: 2026-03-10
Version: Current Beam Machine app build in this repo

Before You Start

  • You need access to Tax.
  • Opportunity records must already exist in the system for this page to be useful.
  • This is a review workspace in the current route, not a government submission portal.

What is this screen?

This screen is BM's opportunity tracker for tax incentives and related support programmes. It helps you keep a list of possible opportunities, the value you think they may be worth, and where they currently sit in your process.

In real-world terms, this is the pipeline board for incentive work, not the actual application form.

When do you use this?

Use this page when the business is assessing:

  • whether a tax incentive might apply,
  • whether you are actively pursuing it,
  • whether it has been awarded,
  • or how much value is sitting in the pipeline

Do not wait until year-end to remember incentives. By then, the supporting evidence and timing rules are usually the real problem.

Where to find it

Primary path: Finance -> Tax -> Grants & Incentives
Route: /dashboard/tax/grants

How to review the opportunity list

  1. Open Tax.
  2. Click Grants & Incentives.
  3. Review the summary cards:
    • Total Opportunities
    • Pursuing
    • Awarded
    • Total Value
  4. Move to the Incentive Opportunities table.
  5. Review each row:
    • Type
    • Qualifying Activity
    • Geography
    • Estimated Value
    • Status
    • Created
  6. Separate serious live opportunities from vague wish-list ideas.
  7. Capture the missing evidence and owner assignments in your normal tax or project process outside this page.

āœ… Checkpoint: You should now know whether the incentive pipeline is real, stale, or fiction.

What BM currently does and does not do here

  • BM does summarize and list incentive opportunities already in the database.
  • BM does show high-level status and estimated value.
  • BM does not currently show create or update controls on this route.
  • BM does not prove that the programme itself is still open, that your entity qualifies, or that the application has been submitted to the relevant authority.

That matters because South African incentive work can involve SARS, the dtic, or another programme owner depending on the incentive.

Common Questions & Issues

"The page is empty"

Why this happens: No incentive opportunities are loaded for the current entity.

Fix: Confirm whether your team is capturing these opportunities elsewhere, or whether this route is waiting for future UI expansion in your environment.

"Can I submit an incentive claim from here?"

Why this happens: Users confuse tracking with submission.

Fix: No current submission workflow is visible on this route. Use it as a tracker, not as proof of filing or application.

"If the value is large, does that mean the incentive is guaranteed?"

Why this happens: Estimated value feels official.

Fix: Treat estimated value as planning information only until eligibility, evidence, and the external application result are confirmed.

SA Compliance Reference

  • Many South African incentives and grants require external evidence packs, programme-specific criteria, and submissions outside Beam Machine.
  • Use this route to track the opportunity pipeline. Do not use it as the sole proof that a claim is current, compliant, or awarded.

Still Stuck?

  • Confirm whether your environment is only using this as a reporting surface.
  • Keep formal application documents and authority correspondence in your external incentive file.
