Creating a Provisional Tax Period
Step-by-step guide for adding a new IRP6 period from the live Provisional Tax screen.
Creating a Provisional Tax Period
This page shows you how to create a provisional tax period so Beam Machine can track the IRP6 cycle, due date, and estimate.
Product: Beam Machine
Module: Tax / Provisional Tax
Role: Accountant, Tax Preparer, Finance Lead
Difficulty: Beginner
Time: 5 minutes
Last Updated: 2026-03-10
Version: Current Beam Machine app build in this repo
Before You Start
- You need access to
Tax -> Provisional Tax. - You need to know the tax year, IRP6 period, and due date.
- You need the estimated taxable income ready.
Current build status: The create form is live, but it expects Estimated Taxable Income in cents on this screen.
What is a provisional tax period?
A provisional tax period is the control record Beam Machine uses for first, second, or third provisional tax cycles. It stores the year, period, due date, and estimate so the route can track deadlines and risk.
When do you use this?
Use this when the next IRP6 cycle needs to be opened in Beam Machine or when the tax team wants to capture a fresh estimate for review.
If you set up the wrong period or wrong due date, the monitoring cards and table become misleading.
Where to find it
Primary path: Finance -> Tax -> Provisional Tax
Route: /dashboard/tax/provisional
How to create a provisional tax period
- Open Tax.
- Click Provisional Tax.
- In Create Provisional Tax Period, enter Tax Year.
- In Period, choose one of:
- First Period (IRP6)
- Second Period (IRP6)
- Third Period (voluntary top-up)
- In Due Date, enter the filing due date you are tracking.
- In Estimated Taxable Income (cents), enter the amount in cents.
- Review the form carefully.
- Click Create Provisional Tax Period.
ā Checkpoint: The success message should appear and the new period should show in the Provisional Tax Periods table.
- Review the new row for Tax Year, Period, Due Date, and Status.
- Review the top cards again to see whether the new record changed the pending or due-soon counts.
Important note about money units
The create form on this page uses cents, not rands.
If you mean R500,000.00, enter 50000000.
Common Questions & Issues
"The amount looks 100 times too small or too large"
Why this happens: The create form expects cents.
Fix: Re-enter the estimate in cents, not rands.
"I cannot choose the exact period I want"
Why this happens: The current form only offers first, second, and third provisional periods.
Fix: Use the matching IRP6 cycle shown on the page. If your process needs deeper variants, handle that outside this route for now.
"I created the period but I still cannot file from here"
Why this happens: This route tracks provisional tax periods and estimates. It is not a full SARS IRP6 filing form.
Fix: Use the page for tracking and review, then complete the real filing through your SARS process.
