Working with Tax Draft Packs
How to use the Beam Machine tax draft packs screen as a draft-status dashboard and avoid overstating it as a full autonomous filing workflow.
Working with Tax Draft Packs
This page shows you how to read the Beam Machine Tax Draft Packs dashboard and where you still need a real reviewer, real support papers, and a real filing process.
Product: Beam Machine
Module: Tax -> Tax Draft Packs
Role: Tax Preparer, Reviewer, Tax Manager, Finance Lead
Difficulty: Intermediate
Time: 6 minutes
Last Updated: 2026-03-10
Version: Current Beam Machine app build in this repo
Before You Start
- You need access to Tax.
- Draft packs must already exist in the system for this page to show anything useful.
- This page is currently a monitoring surface, not a full drafting workbench.
What is a tax draft pack?
A tax draft pack is the bundle of draft return data and review state you use before a filing is approved or submitted.
In Beam Machine today, the Tax Draft Packs route is a dashboard for draft status. It is not a complete on-screen drafting, validating, approving, and filing workflow.
When do you use this?
Use this page when you need to know:
- how many draft packs exist,
- which ones are still drafting,
- which ones are in review,
- and which ones are approved and waiting for the next step
If you do not control this queue, draft work gets lost between "someone started it" and "nobody knows who signed it off."
Where to find it
Primary path: Finance -> Tax -> Draft Packs
Route: /dashboard/tax/draft-packs
How to review draft pack status
- Open Tax.
- Click Tax Draft Packs.
- Review the summary cards:
- Total Drafts
- Drafting
- In Review
- Approved
- Move to the Latest Drafts table.
- Review each row:
- ID
- Tax Type
- Filing Period
- Status
- Created
- Use the status to drive workload and review follow-up.
ā Checkpoint: You should now know whether your draft queue is moving or stalling.
What the current screen proves
- A draft pack record exists.
- It has a tax type and filing period.
- It has a status such as
drafting,review,approved, orsubmitted.
What the current screen does not prove
- It does not show the detailed return fields on this page.
- It does not show visible create, validate, or approve controls on this route.
- It does not prove the draft has been submitted to SARS.
- It does not replace the normal review pack, supporting calculations, or sign-off controls.
Common Questions & Issues
"The draft is approved, so it must be filed"
Why this happens: Users confuse internal approval with external submission.
Fix: Approved means approved in BM status terms. Confirm the actual filing step separately.
"There are no draft packs here"
Why this happens: No packs have been created for the entity, or your environment is not populating this route yet.
Fix: Confirm where draft creation happens in your delivery setup before treating the page as broken.
"Can I open and edit the draft from this screen?"
Why this happens: The dashboard looks like a workbench.
Fix: Not from the current visible route. Use it as a queue monitor unless your environment includes an additional detail flow not shown here.

Still Stuck?
- Confirm whether your environment has an additional draft-detail workflow outside this route.
